I awoke to the sound of the sky falling down in the morning
And it's shaking rains and it's shudder rain in the walls
I once was a man with the world in his hand with the apple
I had a worm in the skin and I'm scuttling the ship
When it rains, when it rains, let it wash us both away
Your love is so much sweeter when it rains
You guys, when you first started out, were really giggling the lines of other people's shows? Is that a common thing around here?
Yeah, we had been practicing for a while and we don't have any shows booked, but we wish we were playing this show
We would crash that show
And when there's tons of people standing in line for a show, they're already too happy
They're already there for music and you can see what kind of response you would get
How many times did you do that?
Just a handful of times
We did it a couple of times
We ended up playing on the street a lot in downtown Portland, just on a bus stop
In a bus stop?
Yeah, just practicing
We weren't really trying to make money or anything, we were just out there
We were just kind of playing and seeing what happened with it
It sounds like it could be pretty southern, I mean, a lot of the stuff that you play
Is that because any of you, I mean is that in any way correct?
Because any of you have made any problems?
My family's from Arkansas
So I think it's their only time
What happened when you got together and started playing?
I think we all just decided that we wanted to play acoustic instruments
And when you do that, it turns out it just blends itself to sounding funky
The sound was not premeditated at all
I think we just went for it and it ended up sounding like the way it is
Right, right, I mean we sort of dipped way back into like back
Hold or lose
All the way back to like gospel
And heading back there to come back up from there
To get everything on the way back up from different at all
When you get up, when you drive, all about to sleep
She's got her bottle and paper so she can forget her name
She's got her bottle and paper so she can forget her name
She's got her bottle and paper so she can forget her name
Well, a long time was built by a few greedy men
People tell me she was a senator from then
She's been playing the darkness ever since she was a kid
And she doesn't mourn for her man coming down
She's worn the color black along
And she was born with stone with a shirt on
She wore black dresses
Oh, she never cried in the morning
She's got her bottle and paper so she can forget her name
She wore black dresses
Oh, she never swung in the morning
She's got her bottle and paper so she can forget her name
Did you ever meet a girl who was born the best of her name?
Have you been working with the same group of songs for a while?
Because how does that kind of...
We've retired a good handful of songs.
We've retired a lot of songs.
Right now we're playing mostly new stuff.
We recorded a new album recently.
We're not going to release it probably until either winter or spring.
But we need to get it out urgently.
But we just got to see what happens.
We've been playing a lot of songs off of that.
We already have two new songs that weren't even recorded for that.
We did one of those tonight.
There were a lot that I didn't recognize tonight.
I'd say it's a good third of old songs.
We have six gigs of 80s and 90s hit music on the iPod.
That's kind of all we have to do.
I'll start creeping into your songwriting.
Oh, I can't wait.
I can't wait until we write the song that sounds like just can't get enough.
When people ask us what our musical influences are, it's totally weird.
It doesn't relate at all.
It doesn't relate to what comes out the other end.
We were getting interviewed for Willem at Week and we referenced R. Kelly probably four times.
It's like, oh, R. Kelly rules.
I love R. Kelly.
R. Coler.
I like Bobby Brown.
Bobby Brown.
Sex Plan.
Sex Plan.
That's R. Kelly.
Yeah, that's his song.
Anyway.
We don't listen to anything serious.
Do you listen to anything that sounds like you guys at all?
Not in the van.
The tour van is a very touchy place to be in.
You can put something on.
You're like, okay, I'm feeling this right now.
Someone else will just scream out, trim this crap off.
I don't want to hear it.
Is this a pre-giggle post gig?
No, this is when I wrote it.
It's a nine different emotions.
It doesn't be on the road with each other.
If everyone in the van is sleeping and you're driving, you can get away with some cure.
Me personally.
I listen to the cure a lot.
You modeled your beard on his ass.
Yeah, yeah.
It's the smiths that you got to watch out for.
It's true.
But then, you know, everyone's sleeping.
You can put it on the smith and the cure.
Until someone wakes up.
When someone wakes up, it's like right to, you know, like, drain, drain.
It has to be something really neutral.
People start screaming.
This is why Coldplay is famous.
It has to be something neutral.
Oh, Michael, that was tight.
Yeah, that one.
I enjoy your brutalness.
