I am Ismael Lorenzo, a freelance photographer. I come from Cuba and my
profile in photography is performing art photography. My focus is dance. I think
my background as a dancer, professional dancer, allowed me to understand very
well these professions. So I have the chance to work with the
choreographer Richard Werlock, the director and choreographer of ballet
basins, and also with his guest choreographers. My main work is about
movement. It's about dance.
When I photograph dance, I have the chance to be free. I decide in which
moment I photograph, I decide actually everything about my work. It was a moment
that I realized that I have plenty of material during those 10 years that I
work with the company. So it was a moment that I decided to do something
different with that and the idea to make a photo book came in this way.
So we have, you know, here I have the double page. There is at the end a black and
white kind of the whole scenario. It just goes to show how much work you do
and how much productivity. 10 years photography of ballet basins. Maybe you
just need sort of like a computer. 10 years photography ballet basins by. Then it's
then it's by and then it brings you in that sort of effect. 10 years ballet
basins, 10 years photography by Ismael Lorenzo. This is the title of my first
photo book. This book is very peculiar because it's not only about a beautiful
collection of nice images from the dance company, but also inside of the book
there is something special. We have music, we have videos. Yes, we have that in a
book and this is possible because this book is a cross-media book. That means
you can use your personal device like a mobile phone or iPad. You go into the
pages of the book. You can scan a QR code and you can go deeper in the process
of my work. You will have photo movies, you will have poetry, and you will have
music. It's a journey into my work.
The other special thing with this book is that the collaboration with the
people are involved in the production of this book. For example, the designers. The
designers of the book are students, students from the last year of the
Art School in Basel. That was also a great opportunity for them to develop a
project like that. And at the end it was very fluid, easy to work with them, and
very creative work. This book I think is not only for the people who love dance
and consume art. I think this book could be a nice book for people who just like
beauty, movement, art, dance.
