TYPE LOCALITY: Canada, Hudson Bay.

DISTRIBUTION: Brooks Range in Alaska (U.S.A.) to Labrador (Canada), Tamaulipas (Mexico), and N. Florida (U.S.A.). Introduced in Europe and Asia.

COMMENT: Lavrov and Orlov, 1973, Zool. Zh., 52:734-742, considered this species distinct from fiber. Reviewed by Jenkins and Busher, 1979, Mamm. Species, 120:1-8.
