Il a collaboré avec Dolly Parton . Leur rupture professionnelle a inspiré à celle-ci la ballade I Will Always Love You [ 1]
Il est hospitalisé le 19 octobre 2007 21 octobre , son porte-parole annonce qu'il lui a été diagnostiqué un cancer du poumon . Le 26 octobre , il quitte l'hôpital mais meurt deux jours plus tard à Nashville dans le Tennessee .
