Revised diagnosis. Small and primitive Hyotheriinae differing from other Hyotheriinae by larger prezygomatic plate and supra-canine arch-niche in males, weakly convergent parietal crests, small and downwardly directed paroccipital process, small and low coronoid process, unique muscle attachment on the lateral side of horizontal rami in males, longer p 1 -p 2 diastema, small and primitive incisors, stout and antero-downwardly and slightly outwardly projecting upper canine, clearly separated paracone and metacone in the P 4, bifid main cusp and isolated talonid in the p 4.
