Annals of the Natal Museum; 7(1):121; Plate VI, Figs. 6–7.
Current name: Pachydactylus oculatus Hewitt, 1927 (fide De Waal, 1978)
Syntypes (3): PEM R7625, R7632, R7634 (formerly AMG 6368); Norvals Pont, Colesberg, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa; Mr. B. Peers, ‘ 23 June 1930 ’.
Remarks: The description illustrates two specimens (PEM R7625 and R7632). No date was provided in the original publication, but the label reads ‘ 23 June 1930 ’. All specimens are in good overall condition, but PEM R7625 has a detached tail. Loveridge (1947) placed P. oculatus and P. m. albomarginatus in the synonymy of P. maculatus, although De Waal (1978) regarded P. m. albomarginatus as a synonym of P. oculatus. He also reported, in error (p. 22, 24) that the types in the AMG were missing. Examination of the types confirms that they are morphologically similar to P. oculatus.
