Genus Metopina Macquart, 1835

Type species. Metopina galeata (Haliday, 1833).

The recognition of a species in this genus is based on females in the first instance. New species represented by males alone cannot be named until associated with their females. The two widespread Australian species are covered by Disney (1994a) and are reported herewith from Tasmania. However, the Australasian species remain largely unknown and so other species may be collected in Tasmania in the future. I therefore provide a key to the Australasian species below. This includes six new species and seven species represented by males, which are given code letters only. These males are not formally described. This will be undertaken when they are associated with their females. The chaetotaxy of the thoracic scutum is as the standard pattern for Megaselia (see above) except where indicated.
