===== Data description ====
For the modelling part (Figs 1-3 and S1-S4 Figs), data were obtained from the following papers:
	- Salamander retinal ganglion cell responses to white-noise stimuli

Neural circuit inference from function to structure
		E Real, H Asari, T Gollisch, M Meister
		Current Biology 27 (2), 189-198, 2017

The projective field of retinal bipolar cells and its modulation by visual context
		H Asari, M Meister
		Neuron 81 (3), 641-652, 2014

Divergence of visual channels in the inner retina
		H Asari, M Meister
		Nature neuroscience 15 (11), 1581-1589, 2012

	- Mouse retinal ganglion cell responses to white-noise stimuli

Gamma-Protocadherins regulate neuronal survival but are dispensable for circuit formation in retina.
JL Lefebvre, Y Zhang, M Meister, X Wang, JR Sanes
		Development 135, 4141-4151, 2008
		Data available at CRCNS: https://crcns.org/data-sets/retina/ret-1

For the experimental part (Figs 4-7 and S5 & S6 Figs), new data were collected by
electrically stimulating the tip of the optic nerve (around 5 mm long) emerging from an isolated retina,
while recording the spiking activity of retinal ganglion cells using a 61-electrode array.
These recordings were made from either mouse or salamander retina.
For details, see Methods section of the paper.
