DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: Database of product-level food loss and waste per supply chain stage

Number of variables: 29

Number of cases/rows: 484

Variable List:
Food group leaving primary production (FoodEx2): This variable is a categorical text variable indicating to which food group, according to the EFSA FoodEx2 classification, a product at the primary production stage belongs to.
Product leaving primary production stage (FoodEx2): This variable is a categorical text variable indicating for which product, according to the EFSA FoodEx2 classification, a product at the primary production stage the Food Loss and Waste quantity is entered.
Product entering supply chain stage (FoodEx2): This variable is a categorical text variable indicating for which product, according to the EFSA FoodEx2 classification, a product entering the corresponding supply chain stage of the included Food Loss and Waste quantity, such as "retail and other distribution of food", the entry was made.
Product leaving supply chain stage (FoodEx2): This variable is a categorical text variable indicating for which product, according to the EFSA FoodEx2 classification, a product leaving the corresponding supply chain stage of the included Food Loss and Waste quantity, such as "processing and manufacturing", the entry was made.
Product leaving primary production (CPA 2.2): This variable is a categorical text variable indicating for which product, according to the CPA 2.2 classification, a product at the primary production stage the Food Loss and Waste quantity is entered.
Product entering supply chain stage (CPA 2.2): This variable is a categorical text variable indicating for which product, according to the CPA 2.2 classification, a product entering the corresponding supply chain stage of the included Food Loss and Waste quantity, such as "retail and other distribution of food", the entry was made.
Product leaving supply chain stage (CPA 2.2): This variable is a categorical text variable indicating for which product, according to the CPA 2.2 classification, a product leaving the corresponding supply chain stage of the included Food Loss and Waste quantity, such as "processing and manufacturing", the entry was made.
Product specification based on study: This is an text variable indicating the exact name of the product as stated in the original publication.
Country of data collection: This is a text variable indicating to which country the data refer.
Year(s) of data collection: This is a mostly numeric variable indicating the years, and sometimes months, of data collection.
Year of publication: This variable indicates the year of publication.
Supply chain stage (broad): This is a categorical text variable indicating the stage in the supply chain that the data refer to.
Supply chain stage (specific): This is a categorical text variable indicating the process in the supply chain to which the data correspond. This is more detailed than the broad supply chain stages.
NACE codes: This is a categorical text variable indicating to which economic activity according to the NACE classification the Food Loss and Waste quantity refers to.
FLW Quantity 1 & FLW Quantity 2: These are numeric variables indicating the quantity of FLW, either as from the original source or recalculated based on the definitional framework in the report D1.1. Recalculated quantities are marked with color.
Unit 1 & Unit 2: These variables indicate the unit of the quantities given in FLW Quantity 1 & 2. It is a categorical text variable.
Edible/inedible: These variables are categorical text variables. They indicate whether the FLW quantities are corresponding the edible, inedible or edible and inedible fractions of the product.
Variance: This is a variable containing numeric and sometimes text data. When available from the original publications, indications of variance is shown in this variable, for instance the range of values or the standard deviation.
Disposal or other use: This is a text variable, indicating, when available from the original studies, how lost or wasted food was disposed or used in ways for which the material is categorized as Food loss and Waste.
Non-FLW uses: This is a text variable indicating how parts of the product were used in ways that are not classified as Food Loss and Waste.
Data collection method: This variable is a categorical text variable. It indicates the methods used for data collection. The categories comprise of the methods allowed for the Food Waste reporting of the European Union Member States.
Number of observations: This is a variable primarily numeric data. It indicates the number of observations made, i.e. the sample size, when available from the original sources.
Sample description: This is a text variable describing the sampling units.
Uncertainty about the data: This is a text variable in which either uncertainties reported in the original publications are included, or uncertainties noted by the authors. Uncertainties could be potentially low representativity due to a small sample.
Further detailed description: This is a text variable which is used to provide the readers of the database with more background information regarding the interpretation of the data.
Source of the data: This is a text variable containing the reference information with regard to the original publication of the data.
