Explanatory Notes:
Basically, a follow-up is carried out by taking follow-up blood cultures to rule out persistent bacteremia and to determine the duration of treatment. Prolonged bacteremia can indicate an inadequate source control, therapy failure or secondary complications of bacteremia.
Possible complications are among others:
  • Sepsis/septic shock
  • Endocarditis
  • Vertebral osteomyelitis
  • Septic emboli
