Same staphylococcus species detected at the tip of a recently removed vascular catheter ?

Explanatory Notes:
In most cases, this is due to contamination when taking the blood culture(s) and targeted antibiotic therapy is not necessary .
Exception : If the same staphylococcal species has been detected by culture at the tip of a recently removed central vascular catheter, a catheter-associated infection is to be assumed and a targeted antibiotic therapy for about 5-7 days is indicated.
To differentiate from a relevant bacteremia, new blood cultures should be taken. If the patient has implanted foreign material (e.g. heart valve replacement, pacemaker/ICD, joint prostheses), an antibiotic therapy can subsequently be considered until the final results of the blood cultures are obtained.
